Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph (von) Schelling, né le 27 janvier 1775 à Leonberg, près de Stuttgart, dans le duché de Wurtemberg et mort le 20 août 1854 à Bad Ragaz en Suisse, est un philosophe allemand, représentant typique de l'idéalisme allemand, aux côtés de Emmanuel Kant, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel et Johann Gottlieb Fichte.

Proche du romantisme, il eut pour condisciples au séminaire protestant de Tübingen Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel et Friedrich Hölderlin. Sa vie fut une véritable odyssée intellectuelle, passant de la défense d'un système à un autre système : philosophie de la Nature, philosophie de la mythologie, philosophie de la Révélation. Une partie de son œuvre fut rapidement connue en France grâce à Victor Cousin.
